I enjoyed a positively rammed Easter Sunday yesterday. It began with early brunch at Toro with Martin - we were to meet at 10:30 and I pretty much didn't wake up until 10 o'clock, YET I was still on time! After brunch we headed to the new Amp'd Mobile studio to meet up with Kate and check out a stripped down 'acoustic' set put on by Klaxons that turned out to not be acoustic at all but a rowdy preview of what was to come later that evening at Lee's Palace. The guys played a five song blitzkrieg and the tiny crowd of about fifty people was absolutely loving it! After the show there was a small meet 'n greet where Martin and I queried singer Jamie about Gravity's Rainbow (pretty much the toughest and most inaccessible read you'll find, but if you can complete it, it's well worth it!) and he asked us if we'd be at the show later on. Since neither of us had snagged tickets before they sold out (ie: in a flash), we told him we hoped to pick some up at the door. He said "Oh, well why don't I just put you on MY guestlist!" so we gave him our names, not at all expecting that he'd remember of be able to pull it off.
After the set I embarked on the near impossible quest of locating a grocery store open on Easter Sunday that would sell vegan cream cheese and was actually successful! I baked a couple dozen cupcakes (Chai Tea Latte & Crimson Velveteen, both from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World) and hauled them over to Dustin's place for his "2nd Annual Ruining Of Easter" potluck dinner. It was a great crowd and mix of food that I sadly had to leave to check out the Klaxons show @ Lee's Palace - when I got there I stood in line with James & Joules of Metric (!) and was floored to find out that I was actually on Jamie's guest list. Wicked! OK...Klaxons TOTALLY brought it last night. The sold out show was RAMMED with frenzied dancers and moshers. It was fairly insane. From the first note everyone in the room was losing their minds. I actually had my drink knocked out of my hand so quickly/hard that half of it ended up IN my nose. Stage diving (literally, corkscrewing off the stage at a running start), major crowd surfing and full on bodyslamming throughout the entire one hour set. People must have been as impressed as I was by the performance because the merch table was pretty much empty by the time I got to it.
I headed back to the potluck just in time for a full blown food fight - I got pelted in the face with two types of ham (both real and mock), mashed potatoes and red peppers. Then we finished off the evening at Sneaky Dee's where everyone got absurdly drunk, I finally noticed that a pineapple ring had been sliding down my shirt for what must have been at least an hour, and I was also accused by near strangers of having poor taste in music and making a weak first impression (!!). I also panicked when I realized I had lost my metropass. Grr. But I called Sneaky Dee's and told them where it might be, and they actually found it!! Great end to an epic long weekend.
