I'm not a fan of hip hop but apparently, being the hipster douchebag that I am, I'm supposed to love (or at the very least, pretend to love) anything that Kanye West puts out.
I didn't mind a few songs from Late Registration, and we've got a First Spin of Kanye's new album Graduation going on at MuchMusic.com...so here's my virgin listener's take on the album, track by track. Oh god please tell me this one's a grower...because so far I'm so fucking bored. The album is extremely slow/loungey. Sounds like something R. Kelly should have put out. Mercifully there are no skits on this album.
1. Good Morning - yawn...slow & boring.
2. Champion - yes...fuck. Getting better. A decent song.
3. Stronger - Oh, borrowing. Or should I say - "sampling". So many times this just isn't done well at all, and it's usually the case with something as already perfect as Daft Punk. I'm a colossal fan of the duo and I'm just not a fan of his use of "Harder Better Faster Stronger" here.
4. I Wonder - The pacing/cadence in this song is outrageously irritating. The only somewhat decent part of the song is the part directly lifted from Jack Jersey's "I Wonder."
5. Good Life - Again with the sampling, and this time it's the high pitched chorus from Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)", and it saves the song for me.
6. Can't Tell Me Nothing - zzz
7. Barry Bonds - zzzzz. PLEASE TELL ME THERE ARE MORE GOOD SONGS ON THIS ALBUM!?
8. Drunk And Hot Girls f. Mos Def - Intriguing song title, but quite possibly the worst and most annoying song I've ever heard.
9. Flashing Lights - I guess this song is all right but I'm so bored at this point it's going to take a lot more to impress me.
10. Everything I Am - ZZZZZZ
11. The Glory - *sigh*...another snooze.
12. Homecoming f. Chris Martin (Coldplay) - The melody here is all right, and the part that Chris Martin sings (chorus) is half decent, but the lyrics are amazingly pedestrian. But I don't think it's any secret that Chris has completely lost his songwriting edge in the last five years. Moving along...
13. Big Brother - Wow, another boring, generic R&B song. I'm so shocked that this is how the album's ending. Not.
14. Bittersweet Poetry f. John Mayer - Please tell me the iTunes bonus track is going to somehow redeem the album? No. It's a terrible sappy song that sounds like it should have New Edition or Boyz II Men as its authors.
Wow. No Gold Digger. No Diamonds. No Addiction. No Jesus Walks. At least now I have a new sleep inducer to replace my first year chemistry textbooks. ZZZ...sweet dreams.
